In the United States, “military branches” refers to the distinct services that make up the nation’s armed forces. Each branch has its own mission focus, training culture, and operational environment, but they work together in joint operations under the Department of Defense (with the Coast Guard shifting between DHS and DoD roles depending on mission). Knowing what each branch does helps civilians understand national defense—and helps service members and families navigate roles, terminology, and expectations.
The six U.S. military branches are the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. The Army specializes in large-scale land operations and sustained ground combat.
